Jonas and Rachel Hochstetler designed and built this cabin as an addition to our family home in Stuarts Draft.
Many evenings and weekends were spent selecting logs, preparing them, notching the corners and finally trimming out the inside.
The hand hewn Oak logs were salvaged from an old barn located here in the Shenandoah Valley, the stone chimney and fireplace were built with reclaimed stone from a demolition project in Harrisonburg and the siding on the gable ends is original weathered American Chestnut siding.
Nothing beats a roaring fire on a cold winter evening.
Our wide plank, 10″ – 16″, antique barn-board Oak flooring gives this cabin an authentic aged atmosphere
The interior of this log cabin has so many nice details.
The flooring is our Antique Barn-board Oak, the ceiling joist are hand hewn 6×6’s and the stair stringers are old barn timbers as well.
The stair treads were made from original barn planks taken from a pre Civil War barn in Churchville, VA.
Any barns that made it through the war are truly a rare find here in the valley.
These wide floor planks were face nailed using a decorative wrought head nail with a black oxide finish.
The nails are designed to simulate the hand-forged nails of the late 1700’s, the head is three-sided and the nail has a black oxide coating. Ideal for authentic restoration and antique effect.
We have these nails available to send with flooring orders.
This Wormy Chestnut door was hand crafted by Jonas. These wide plank Chestnut boards are a rare treasure, but we still have some available for custom projects.
Upstairs in the cabin we have Wormy Chestnut planks that serve as both flooring for upstairs and ceiling for downstairs.
These Chestnut planks are about 1-1/2″ in thickness which gives lots of strength to bridge the hand hewn joist that are on 2′ centers.
Ahhh….
Finally finished!
Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of many hours of tedious but enjoyable work.
