This beautiful 1823 Federal-style townhouse in NYC used our Antique Wormy Chestnut throughout the home in a 2012 renovation.
Built on the former grounds of the mansion “Richmond Hill,” where George Washington oversaw the American Revolution and Vice President John Adams once lived, this land is rich with American history.
The rich history doesn’t stop there—this home was also the personal haven of the iconic choreographer Paul Taylor, who used the top floor as his dance studio. It’s where he created some of his most celebrated works, including Esplanade and Promet

Nestled in the historic South Village, 27 Vandam Street is part of a rare collection of Federal-style townhomes. The homeowners, along with Matthew Baird Architects and Walker Ridge LLC were able to completely renovate this home while retaining a lot of the original masonry, mouldings and staircase parts.
Respectful of the historic nature of the property, the renovation team carefully preserved details like the high parlor ceilings, original staircase railing, and crown molding, all while bringing the home into the modern era with every conceivable luxury and convenience.
As you walk through this spacious, 5,100-square-foot townhome spread out over four stories with a skylit lower level, you can’t help but feel a sense of balance between the old and the new. The parlor level greets you with a cozy sitting room, complete with a wood-burning fireplace. Original pocket doors lead you to a generous dining room with another fireplace and wet bar. The sleek, modern kitchen is a chef’s dream, with Calacatta Regina marble counters and high-end appliances. From the kitchen, you’ll be drawn to the glass wall that opens up to a peaceful, manicured garden.

Our Reclaimed Wormy Chestnut flooring complemented the vision of the renovation by adding its own sense of history and warmth within the space. This project used random widths from 4.5″-9.5″ throughout the main living areas and 3.5″-6.5″ widths in the smaller areas. All of the flooring was installed over radiant hydronic in-floor heating.
Sourced from old barns, mills, and historical buildings, Reclaimed Wormy Chestnut wood tells a story with its rich character and natural imperfections. The “wormy” markings, created by the tiny tunnels of insects long ago, add a unique texture that can’t be replicated in new materials. This reclaimed wood is not only environmentally sustainable but also incredibly durable, making it an excellent choice for those who appreciate craftsmanship and the beauty of natural aging. Each plank of Wormy Chestnut carries with it a legacy of the past, bringing timeless charm to modern interiors.
